Micromanagement tactics such as remote monitoring apps are outdated and have no place in today's organisational culture, said Berry Lumpkins, global director of Leadership & Talent Development at DP World, UAE.
Speaking at the Remote Workforce Summit 2020, he described organisational culture as the collective personality of the company.
"Culture belongs to everyone in an organisation," he said. "The pandemic today has presented us with an unprecedented moment to transform company culture. It has given us insights on the secret to great organisational culture. This revolves around engaging employees, especially as they work from home."
Organisations, he said, have an opportunity to allow their employees to crowdsource new ideas and that this will get them invested and emotionally attached to the company. "Invest in wellness and think outside the box; all this will have a big impact on talent. Above all, know that remote monitoring is not needed by organisations. This type of management where you count the number of hours that an employee has worked, or how many e-mails they have sent, is dead."
Similarly, Peter Baker, group chief human resources officer at First Abu Dhabi Bank, asked organisations to "embrace trust" when it comes to their employees working remotely.
"Traditional inspection concepts don't work anymore," he said. "You have to reinforce the fact that managers have to trust their employees, and they need to do this by building personal intimacy. Managers need to get to know their people in a more human way, and form a personal connection that will lead to trust. This, in turn, will build belief and capability. Investing in tools that will help people work remotely and more efficiently is a good starting point with proven return on investment."
