The news report Dubai family inconsolable after girl's selfie death (KT, Oct 28) sheds light on an increasing trend among youngsters. Popularity of social media platforms and increasingly easy access of the latest electronic gadgets is having an undesirable impact on the lives of many. It's all about garnering attention through likes, shares, and status updates.
A study done in the US notes that selfie craze has led to a significant number of deaths. The government in Dubai has been proactive and maintained civic decorum through tough rules and regulations. Maybe something should be done on these lines, too. And we as parents should also educate children on the perils of such acts and the proper use of social media. After all, we have a moral responsibility towards them.
