M.J. Akbar, journalist and author, and N.K. Singh, former bureaucrat, are among the new faces inducted in the main opposition party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Power blinds politicians to the gravity of the issues people face. The power they wield is used to serve their own interests and not as an instrument to bring about a perceptible change to better society’s lot. I hope that Akbar, who is closely associated with the media, has understood the mindset of politicians.

Let us hope the change helps make people the priority at a time when corruption has replaced good governance and is creating corrupt lawmakers. I look forward to seeing how the intellectual community can change the prevailing perceptions about politicians.
