Soul, Shakeela and Santa: 4 new movies to watch in UAE this weekend

Soul. What is it that makes you, you? Pixar’s latest Soul introduces Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx), a middle-school band teacher who receives the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. However, one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before: a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with precocious soul, 22 (Tina Fey), who has never understood the appeal of the human experience. As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what’s great about living, he may just discover the answers to some of life’s most important questions. IMDb gives it 7.9 (OPENING DEC. 25)

Shakeela (Hindi). Based on the life of the eponymous ‘90s south Indian superstar, Shakeela tells the story of a young woman navigating the delicate line between screen siren success and attempting to live a regular life. Richa Chadda plays the titular protagonist who, at the height of her fame, somehow managed to release a new movie each week. Disowned by her family as a result of her films’ content, Shakeela charts the actor’s journey from B-grade fodder to the big time. There are so far no ratings.

My Adventures with Santa. Just in time for Christmas Day, we had to have one Santa movie and it arrives courtesy of Denise Richards. Playing a mum to two children and stuck in a dead-end marriage, Richard’s son (Dante Scalia) writes a letter to the Man In Red (Erick Devine) pleading with him to save his family. St. Nick duly obliges, whisking the troupe away to the North Pole in order to complete a very special mission: work together to save Christmas from the evil La Befana (Jamie Luner). IMDb gives it 4.1

Guns Akimbo. There are few trailers from which you emerge exhausted, though Guns Akimbo has managed to succeed where many have failed. This big-budget Black Mirror episode is inviting you to check your brain at the door and just go with the ludicrous premise. Daniel Radcliffe plays Miles, a normal guy who is somehow sucked into the world of Skism: a warped Internet reality contest where psychopaths are pitted against each other to the death. A shady group bolts guns to Miles’ hands, kidnap his girlfriend to make sure he complies, and gives him a head start on a group of killers out to get him. IMDb gives it 6.3
