The race was held as part of the partnership between the Jebel Ali Racecourse and the Italian venue within the Shaikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Horse Races Trophy.

Estejo was settled in third early as stablemate and pacemaker Russian King led them at a decent clip.

The winner, a big strong galloping type, was caught a little flat-footed as the tempo quickened over three furlongs out, but soon found his stride to lead inside the final 300 yards. Although got within a head of the winner a furlong out, he could not quicken and Estejo was always staying on the better.

Estejo is trained in Germany by Ralf Rohne but has raced there only once, with all but five of his 24 career starts having been in Italy, where owner Giovanni Martone is based.

The seven-year-old’s previous Group 1 success came in the 2008 Premio Roma.

Runner-up Voila Ici looked to be almost back to his best, having taken time to come to himself this year.

“He has run well and will be happier when we have had some more rain,” said trainer Vittorio Caruso of his grey six-year-old. Tom Queally finished seventh of nine on the Mario Hofer-trained Zazou.

Meanwhile, Blue Marte walked away with the 2400m Premio Shadwell Handicap third race on the card.

In the 1600m Premio Dubai Airports-Tris Straordinaria Handicap, Jambal Likerr made virtually all to cross the finish line in great style.

The brilliant filly, Zamindowa defied the tough weather conditions to land the 2000m Premio Mario Perretti UAE Embassy second race of the evening.

However, after two unsuccessful starts of the season, Miles Glorious did everything right to fly high with the Premio Emirates Airline trophy.

The UAE ambassador to Italy Abdul Aziz Nasser Al Shamsi hailed the strong the support the races have been receiving from Shaikh Hamdan.

“It was a successful effort by all means and there’s no better way to promote the UAE and strengthen its ties than to sponsor such popular events,” he said.

Mirza Al Sayegh, director of the office of Shaikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance said they are planning to turn the series into a strong regional championship.

“The organising committee is considering taking the series to new heights. Plans are underway to organise racing festivals in the heart of Europe,” he said.
