“Musculoskeletal issues are very common but least covered during our professional development. For that reason, we wanted to make our staff aware of this important topic. High quality training and professional development for all of our staff, is a key strategy aim of the Abu Dhabi Ambulatory Healthcare Services (AHS),” said Dr Omar Naseeb Al Jabri, Chief Medical Officer, Operations Division of AHS, a Seha subsidiary.
The Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD) conference will be hosted by AHS in partnership with the British Medical Journal on November 24.
Some of the topics that will be covered at the meeting will include shoulder pain, back and neck pain and the management of patients with hip and knee aches.
Musculoskeletal disorders cover any injury, damage or disorder of the joints or other tissues in the upper/lower limbs or the back.
Risk factors can be found in virtually every workplace from construction sites to offices. Currently, MSDs cost UK employers 11.6 million working days a year in lost production.
Upper Limb Disorder (ULD) includes the condition known as ‘repetitive strain injury’ (RSI). Generally ULD refers to disorders of the hand, wrist, arm, shoulder and neck. It covers those conditions, with specific medical diagnoses, where there is pain without specific symptoms.
Lower Limb Disorder (LLD) is used as a generic term for a range of disorders of the hips, legs, knees, ankles and feet.
About 20 per cent of all work-related musculoskeletal disorders affect the lower limbs. In 2009-2010 an estimated 94,000 people in Great Britain who had worked in the past year suffered from an LLD caused or made worse by their work. It is estimated that these workers took an average of 25 days off work.
One piece of research suggested that 50 per cent of cases of surgically treated knee Osteoarthritis and 30 of surgically treated hip Osteoarthritis were related to occupational factors. Back pain is another common ailment that is often classed as a form of MSD.
