One of the most popular tourist destinations in the emirate, as part of its comprehensive plan to promote the historic landmarks and attract an increasing number of visitors, Rashid Al Ghazal, Assistant Director General for Legal and Administration Affairs of Sharjah Municipality, told Khaleej Times.

Mr Al Ghazal explained that the market is one of the oldest shoping malls and is charactersied by its unique architectural buildings.


"New sections will be added to the existing buildings including constructing prayer rooms for women in the first and second levels of the two buildings," he noted.

The municipality will also instal instruction boards in the market and build more public utilities, Mr Al Ghazal pointed out.


"The extension area will be about 1,880 square metres in addition to another 500 square metres area including several shops, restaurants, entertainment areas, among others," he said.

Sharjah Municipality and other government departments are represented in a committee established to develop the market and to promote it to attract more visitors, Mr Al Ghazal added.

He mentioned the market had been constructed on the pattern of the old Islamic architecture and had been attracting a large number of visitors and tourists who were interested in buying curios, gold, among others.
