The UAE's ambassador to Ireland, Khalid Nasser Lootah, has been recalled over allegations that he forced his maids to work long hours for meagre salaries.

Three Filipina maids who worked for the ambassador were awarded 80,000 euros each last week after they told a tribunal they worked 15-hour days, seven days a week for less than 2 euros an hour.

This followed an Employment Appeals Tribunal ruling after hearing the case.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it takes the matter seriously and has recalled the envoy. It said it will continue its investigation into the issue.
