Abu Dhabi - The UAE Cabinet has approved a number of recommendations made last year by the Federal National Council, FNC, for the policy of the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments.
The 12 approved recommendations included a strategic plan to emiratise jobs in preaching, iftaa (issuing fatwas or religious rulings), fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), and sermon delivery.
The other recommendations call for standardising authoritative sources of official fatwas through a central process, giving the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments the power to supervise all Quran memorisation centres and religious institutes, as well as amending privileges of Emirati imams (leaders of mosques), muezzins (persons who call to prayer), and muftis (scholars who give rulings on religious matters).
In its recommendations, the FNC underlined the goals of promoting the success of initiatives like national service and boosting national identity with Islam as one of its main components, as well as work for national unity and cohesion behind the wise leaders of the country. It also called for projecting the traditional Emirati architectural style in new mosques, promoting water and power rationalisation and setting standards for cleanliness of mosques to promote the civilisation of Islam.
The Cabinet also approved the FNC’s recommendations for the policy of the Social Affairs Ministry on consumer cooperative societies. In the recommendations, the FNC called for amending Federal Law No. 13 of 1976 to keep pace with the political and economic developments in the country and to allow consumer cooperative societies to take part in developing the said law.
The recommendations also called for drawing up an annual plan to raise awareness about cooperative societies in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and media organisations
The Cabinet decided to assign a committee to study a recommendation calling for tasking the Ministry of Economy with overseeing cooperative societies and the Ministry of Social Affairs with overseeing all other types of societies.
