Watched by 11,325 spectators, the 2-1 win at home over arch-rivals Al Jazira in the Capital Derby at the Al Nahyan Stadium on Sunday night took the three-time champions to 36 points from 14 games, three points ahead of Al Jazira. It was Al Jazira’s first loss in the League and it left the race for the title poised for an intriguing finish, with eight games left. Al Jazira had won their home game 1-0 last October.
Baiano, who moved from Al Jazira to Al Wahda in the summer, struck in the 18th and 66th minutes, while Subait Khater scored for Al Jazira in the 64th minute.
The Derby was marred by a pitch invasion by a spectator after Baiano’s second goal and some unpolite remarks made by an Al Wahda fan to Al Jazira coach Abel Braga after the game.
Al Wahda coach Josef Hickersberger had rested his star forward Baiano, along with midfielders Andre Luciano Pinga and Marcio Rodriguez in the previous game over Ajman, which they won 3-2 and it seemed to have worked as the threesome were fresh for the Derby.
Hickersberger started with Baiano and Marcio Rodriguez, while Pinga was on the bench.
It was Al Jazira who had the first chance after kick-off but captain Ibrahim Diaky’s long ranger went over the bar.
But it was Al Wahda who went ahead with Fernando Baiano scoring in the 18th minute. Baiano slotted home a deflection from Hamdan Al Kamali after an Ismail Matar corner.
Jazira had an opportunity to draw level but Subait Khater sent his threatening freekick wide of the left post.
Al Wahda’s Baiano could have got his and the team’s second goal but his header went over the bar after being put in by Hasan Muzaffar in the 30th minute.
Al Wahda didn’t give Al Jazira much space and the latter found it a wee bit tough with them being heavily marked.
Jazira put a much improved show after the break but Al Wahda goalkeeper Adel Al Hosni kept them at bay after Rafael Sobis’ left-footer was punched away over the bar in the 54th minute.
It seemed Al Jazira had nullified Wahda’s lead by drawing level in the 64th minute through Subait Khater. But Subait Khater’s celebration of quieting the vocal Wahda supporters and then at the corner flag was short-lived as Wahda’s Baiano’s headed home for his and his team’s second goal in the very next minute.
Pinga came in for Hasan Muzaffar and Wahda could have increased the lead but his freekick just went wide of the post.
