“Spain have talented players and they have maintained their level all the time. They won the Euro Championship and the World Cup. Spain have shown huge potential. As a former footballer and football fan, it is fantastic to see Barcelona and Spain do so well. Spain play quality football. It is sheer talent. We have not seen a team so powerful since Pele’s Brazil. Zidane was making a difference for France for sometime but the Spanish team has got abundance of talent,” Desailly said on the sidelines of the nominations announcement of the Laureus World Sports Awards on Tuesday.
Abu Dhabi will host the Laureus World Sports Awards for the second consecutive time. The Awards will be held from February 5 to 7.
And Desailly was pleased to be in the UAE capital. “It is a great pleasure to be here in Abu Dhabi. I feel we are on a new frontier. Abu Dhabi has hosted the FIFA Club World Cup which Inter Milan won, although I would have preferred AC Milan to have won it. The 2022 World Cup will be held in the Middle East. You also have the Formula One Abu Dhabi Grand Prix apart from the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship and the World Tennis Championship. Lot of the credit goes to Aabar and the Abu Dhabi Sports Council who believe in the power of sports. I like the enthusiasm they have here,” said Desailly.
Desailly was also thrilled that the Middle East will get to host the World Cup. “FIFA President Sepp Blatter is doing well and doing opposite to what people think. Qatar have the infrastructure and football needs to go to new places. It is great for Qatar and Russia,” Desailly said.
The Awards night would be the most glittering extravaganza but Desailly highlighted the behind-the-scenes work of the Academy. “It is not just the Awards but also the Sport For Good Foundation. Sport really has the power to change the world. There are 80 projects of the Foundation all around the world. We are using sport as a means to improve people’s lives. I live in Ghana now and the Laureus Foundation has helped the orphanage,” he said.
