This restaurant in north Wales, UK, wants its customers to spend quality time with friends and family and has come up with a unique idea. The Fat Boar in Wrexham is offering 25 per cent discount on food to customers who are ready to ditch their phones whilst dining.
The restaurant has boxes on all the tables in which their customers are required to lock their phones and hand over keys to the staff. The phones will be locked in the boxes for the entire duration of the meal and the customers are not allowed to see or answer phone calls.
The manager at Fat Boar, Jade Darlington, was quoted as saying in Mirror Online, "We all see people sitting together at tables, waiting for their food without talking and looking at their phones. I think we all feel a certain amount of pressure to be constantly checking emails, social media, texts and all the other messaging on our phones."
Phones have become such an intense part of everyday life that it is difficult to refrain from checking phones frequently. Darlington added, "But if we can do something to encourage people to put their phones down and concentrate solely on one another then I think that's a really positive thing."
The offer has already attracted hundreds of people to visit the restaurant for Mobile Free Monday. Director Rich Watkin, who came up with the idea said, "I am the first to admit that I am constantly glued to my mobile phone. We all have busy lives and they can be a fantastic way to keep in touch with everything we need to run our hectic schedules. But I couldn't help but think it would be nice to encourage some of our loyal customers to make the most of an evening out with us and escape from all the constant 'bing bing'."
He added, "Mobiles can often be a real distraction and stop us from just sitting among family and friends and simply having a good conversation and that's why I came up with the idea."
