Students in Dubai are being warned by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research against taking lessons at unauthorised centres in the UAE
The warning follows claims by private education providers promising to help students prepare for the Common Educational Proficiency Assessment (CEPA) exam.
The CEPA exam is a prerequisite for admission at any federal institution in the UAE or securing a scholarship to study abroad.
The Ministry has warned students against ‘exploitation’ by some private institutions and education centres that allegedly offer training for the CEPA exam or even claim their possession of the exam. The department affirms that it has no agreement with any entities in this regard nor has it received any applications to that effect. The exams are developed by the Ministry after consultation with three federal institutions of higher education, to assess the language skills of grade 12 students entering federal colleges or universities.
The Ministry has also developed and uploaded test practice materials free of charge to candidates on the CEPA website as part of its efforts to provide support and assistance to help students prepare better for the exam.
The website also features an updated version of the CEPA Challengee-book that contains previous versions of the exam with corresponding answer keys. In addition, the Ministry, in cooperation with the schools, has emphasised the significance of the CEPA exam.
Students can acquire proper training through the test practice material available online.
It has to be noted that some schools have allocated several hours during the school week for the CEPA test practice sessions using the online materials with the assistance of their English teachers.
CEPA consists of two tests: CEPA-English and CEPA-Math. CEPA-English is one of the prerequisites for students who wish to pursue studies in one of the three federal institutions located in the UAE: United Arab Emirates University (UAEU); Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT); or Zayed University (ZU); or to pursue career-technical education supervised by Abu Dhabi Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (ACTVET) that oversees technical and vocational training offered by Abu Dhabi Vocational Education and Training Institute (ADVETI); or to study abroad under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Higher Education.
The Ministry has published the CEPA practice material at the following link: http://ws1.mohesr.ae/cepawebpractice.
