“Thanks to efforts by the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE has been able to make the educational achievements and overall development,” Shaikh Nahyan said.
He also expressed appreciation of the role of General Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
The minister was commenting on the UAE University’s ranking among the Top 50 Under 50 rankings by QS World University Rankings. According to the QS World University Rankings, the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) is placed among the top 50 world universities that were founded within the past 50 years, acknowledging the rapid pace of progress within both the UAE and its national institution of higher education.
Among the top universities established since 1962, UAEU ranks in position 48, between Aston University, UK, and Griffith University, Australia. Both these universities, and in fact, most other top world universities, were founded earlier than 1976, the year in which the late Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan established the UAEU.
Within the Top 50 Under 50 rankings, only eight universities in the world that are younger than UAEU are ranked above the UAEU, reflecting the very dynamic growth and ambition to strive for excellence of the institution.
The QS World University Rankings is a ranking of the world’s top 700 universities by Quacquarelli Symonds using a method that has published annually since 2004.
The UAEU, which has nine faculties and 12,500 students enrolled in the fall 2011/2012 programme, has improved its global ranking from 378 last year to 338 this year in the QS Top 500 Universities listing this year. The QS World University Rankings currently considers over 2,000 and evaluates over 700 universities in the world, ranking the top 500.
Compiled by the QS Intelligence Unit, the ranking applies six broad indicators with different weightages to arrive at a composite score. These include academic reputation (40 per cent), employer reputation (10 per cent), citations per faculty (20 per cent), faculty student ratio (20 per cent), proportion of international students (5 per cent) and proportion of international faculty (5 per cent).
