The scare of a second wave of Covid-19 infections is becoming real by the day with the World Health Organization reporting a record single-day increase in global coronavirus cases on Sunday. Even though the report mentioned rising cases in India, the US, and Brazil for this alarming number, a closer look at several countries shows that the numbers have been inching up in the last few weeks. In the UAE, too, we have seen similar trends with the daily infections touching 1,000-mark just a few days ago. Israel has become the first country to reimpose a nation-wide lockdown, and many countries in Europe are struggling with the rising rate of daily infections. The only silver lining here is the rate of recoveries is increasing, too.
But is that the reason people have lowered their guard and are taking comfort in the fact that more and more are getting better? Is this the right approach when the scientists are not yet sure of the effectiveness of herd immunity, and cannot draw firm conclusions about long-term immune responses to Covid-19 virus? Reports of re-infections are emerging from different cities globally, and so are accounts of people who are struggling with weak immune systems and other health problems long after getting the much-prized negative coronavirus test report. The solutions to combating the coronavirus are no mystery. It is as simple as wearing a mask, practising good hygiene, and maintaining social distancing. It is time to do this right and not surrender in this fight against the pandemic. It will be difficult, but it must be done for a healthier tomorrow.
