According to Colonel Ojail Ali Abdullah, acting Director of the Western Region Police, they received complaints from the owners of four villas in March this year that unknown persons sneaked into their premises when they were away and escaped with home appliances, computers, mobile phones, cash, cameras, wristwatches, perfumes, accessories and women’s garments.
“The suspect(s) used to climb the fence and enter the villas through windows and decamp with the valuables,” Col Ali Abdullah said.
A team formed to investigate the cases had been monitoring the area. The officers recently spotted M.A.A. walking suspiciously among the houses, before he jumped over the fence of a villa and entered it.
The police, who had an arrest warrant from the Public Prosecution, encircled the villa and raided it and found the suspect hiding inside a water tank on the rooftop as he felt he was being monitored.
During interrogation, he confessed to burgling the villas. The police seized several stolen items from his car which was impounded, Col Ali Abdullah said.
The suspect used to work as the driver of his sponsor, but left the work a year ago and took up the job of a coffee vendor at wedding ceremonies on a daily wage basis in contravention of the residency law, he said.
Gang of power cable thieves busted
In another case, Al Gharbia Police busted a gang behind five incidents of cable theft with the arrest of its seven alleged Asian members aged between 22 and 35 years. The gang had allegedly managed to steal 8,000 metres of overhead power cables which fed telecommunication towers on the Abu Dhabi-Al Silaa Highway, Col Ali Abdullah said.
The suspects, six of them being infiltrators, had cut the cables from the poles on the highway with technical perfection.
A taskforce set up to reveal the mystery of the frequent thefts kept an eye on the highway. Recently, the suspects again tried to steal the cables after midnight. The police caught them despite their stiff resistance and attempt to flee, said Col Ali Abdullah, who praised the courage of the police personnel.
The police seized the tools the suspects used to cut the cables.
When confronted with the pieces of evidence, the suspects confessed to forming a gang and specialising in stealing power cables.
Col Ali Abdullah called on the residents and companies to take precautionary measures and secure their houses when they are away and inform the police immediately in case their houses are robbed. Quick reporting of such crimes will help in the arrest of the culprits.
He also advised people to keep their valuables in banks to avoid being robbed, though the police would do their best to to ensure the safety and security of the residents.
