The surprise attack took place at about 2.30am in Karama when the two Asian men, both 23, tried to intervene in a brutal attack on an elderly man — but within a matter of minutes the tables turned and they became the victims.
Neither of the victims wanted to be named. One, a bank worker, who was stabbed nine times, remains in hospital and is being treated for deep wounds to his stomach and hand.
Speaking to Khaleej Times on Monday, a second victim, an events coordinator, said he was released from hospital on Sunday after receiving 14 puncture wounds from the knife used in the attack.
“We were on our way to get food, and we saw two young guys beating up an old man, so we went over to try and stop it,” he said.
As they faced a barrage of verbal abuse from the two Asian youngsters, aged 15 and 16, the elderly man, thought to be in his sixties, got up from the floor and fled the scene.
“The two boys started shouting at us telling us to go away. They said it had nothing to do with us.”
And a few seconds later, after the argument escalated into a physical fight, one of the boys hit the victim who remains hospitalised around the head with a large stone — an injury which needed five stitches to treat.
Within a matter of minutes, two older men, aged 27 and 30, who according the second victim were friends with the juveniles, approached the scene and began stabbing the two men without warning.
All four gang members then attempted to rob the men of their possessions before making off with just their wallets, leaving the two victims bleeding on the roadside.
“They tried to grab our phones, but they only managed to get away with our wallets,” a stroke of luck, he said, as that left them able to call for help.
Asked why they tried to intervene in the original attack, he said he felt pity for the elderly man as was a similar age to his father and appeared completely defenceless.
“He was totally helpless. And I don’t blame him for running off as he was just trying to save his own life.”
Despite about five or six witnesses to the brutal attack, he said no one stepped in to help. But he said he did not feel any anger towards anyone, just lucky to be alive.
An ambulance transported the two men to Rashid Hospital.
An official from Al Rafa Police station in Bur Dubai confirmed two juveniles had been detained, but said the search was ongoing for the other two men.
