A domestic worker, who allegedly stole sheep from his sponsor’s farm and then sold them to a shepherd, was charged with theft in the Court of First Instance on Wednesday.

The worker, a 32-year-old Bangladeshi identified as A.M., allegedly stole six sheep in December last year and then sold them to a Pakistani shepherd, K.K., 61, who reportedly bought them while aware they were stolen. The duo was charged with theft from workplace and possession of stolen property when their case was brought before the court.

The worker’s sponsor, an 80-year-old Emirati retired employee, told the prosecution that he found out about the theft when he went to Al Rawiyah to buy cattle-feed. “There, I found sheep of the same breed that I owned. I asked the vendor about the sheep’s origin, who told me that K.K. sold them to him.”

The complainant reported the theft when he could not find K.K. “I told police officers at Al Habab Police Station about my suspicions.”

A police corporal, who interrogated K.K., quoted him as admitting that he purchased six stolen sheep from A.M. and another accomplice, at a farm in Al Rawiyah for Dh2,400.

When questioned, A.M. confessed to the crime and said he had an accomplice who is at large.

The sheep owner said in the investigation that he was not aware his workers were stealing and re-selling the livestock he owned. A verdict is expected on February 26.
