A tourist appeared in court on Thursday charged with the robbery of Dh400,000 worth of jewellery, Dh25,000 in cash and money in other currencies worth about Dh75,000.
Forty five-year-old J.L, from Colombia, is accused of breaking into a villa in Jumeirah at a time when its occupants were away.
He pleaded guilty in the Court of First Instance to charges of forced robbery at night, trespass and damage of others' property.
He is accused of breaking the villa door's lock and bag and safe locks. The damage was put at about Dh1,000.
The complainant, a 59-year-old Egyptian manager, said the break-in happened when he and his wife went to a nearby mall on June 26, last year.
"We left around 6.30pm and came back less than three hours later. My wife went to the bedroom and found the safe broke-opened".
He called the police and crime scene investigators came and lifted fingerprints. It was then known more than one person was involved.
He said the thieves walked away with jewellery worth Dh400,000 and a total of Dh100,000 in cash.
A police lieutenant said they received many complaints about thefts from villas across Dubai.
"J.L. admitted that they rang the villa's door several times and knew none was there".
The police learnt that the American had fled to Oman.
The hearing has been adjourned to April 14.
