The Court of First Instance listened to the forensic physician to assess the physical harm sustained by the complainant. It also heard what other students involved in the fight, had to say.
The Iraqi student is believed to have stabbed the Lebanese student thrice, including a stab near the heart. The defendant was on trial on attempt to murder charge.
He and the defendant had an altercation in which the complainant verbally abused the defendant’s mother. The defendant then punched him on his face and the two got engaged in a physical fight.
The defendant then went outside and after a few minutes he sent his friend to the complainant. He wanted to settle the dispute because he was not carrying a knife. The two walked for a short distance and the defendant then asked the accused why the latter had abused his mother. The complainant said he did it because the defendant had abused his mother the day before.
Suddenly, the defendant took a knife and stabbed the complainant twice. As the complainant tried to walk away he stabbed him again and fled the scene.
The youths who witnessed the fight called the ambulance and the complainant was rushed to the hospital. A Syrian student said in the investigation that the stabbing followed an altercation and a physical fight. He said he heard the defendant asking the complainant to come out to a nearby parking lot to settle the dispute.
The witness shortly, saw the complainant lying injured on the ground. He added that he and another Lebanese student who happened to be there called the police.
A police lieutenant said that the defendant voluntarily admitted that he stabbed the complainant. He also led the officer to the supermarket in Port Saeed area where he had purchased the knife and to the crime scene.
According to the forensic report of the General Department of Criminal Evidence, the stab wounds the complainant received in his chest and abdomen were deep and could have been fatal had he not received the necessary treatment in time.
The verdict is subject to appeal within 15 days at the Court of Appeal.— mary@khaleejtimes.com
