Sharjah: A former Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) staffer has been charged with embezzlement in the Sharjah Shariah Court of First Instance after he and an accomplice allegedly tampered with taxi meters.
A witness in the case — who works in the collection department of the RTA and is in charge of collecting money from taxi drivers — said in court that the embezzlement came to light during a periodic inspection held on October 17.
An Asian driver was held for allegedly tampering with the meter during the inspection. During his interrogation, he led the police to the main suspect, A.A., who reportedly helped the drivers tamper with the meters.
A.A. confessed to the charges during his interrogation, but denied them in court.
The case has been adjourned until December 7.
