Dubai — A 55-year-old nurse allegedly embezzled over Dh1.2 million from a hotel by tampering with 9,195 copies of receipts of registration for medical services provided by the Dubai Municipality.
The Filipina nurse, identified as D.B., changed the fees on the receipt copies from Dh110 to Dh210. She allegedly did this from November 2007 to March this year, the Dubai Court of First Instance heard on Wednesday.
She also allegedly changed the dates on the receipt copies and used the forged documents by submitting them to the accounts section at the hotel on Shaikh Zayed Road where she worked.
She has been placed in provisional detention.
D.B. has been charged with fraud, breach of trust, forgery and use of forged documents. An Egyptian manager, 59, who was handling the accounts section at the hotel at the time, said in the prosecution investigation that D.B. was the hotel’s medical care coordinator. On March 12, two applications filed by the accused were given for verification.
“The applications, which were for two employees who submitted their resignations in November last year, raised our suspicion. She filed for renewal of their health cards in February this year even though they had already resigned.”
By checking all the transactions that were processed by D.B., it was learnt that she tampered with 9,195 copies of receipts of medical fees. “We were told by the Dubai Municipality clinic that the fees to renew a health card is Dh110.” D.B. is believed to have changed the fees on the receipt copies and embezzled the difference.
