A 19-year-old jobless man was charged with attempted murder on Sunday at the Dubai Court of First Instance after he stabbed a compatriot with a knife.
The Emirati defendant's accomplices have been referred to the Juveniles Court.
Public prosecution records show that the incident took place on April 19 at a gate of a mall and could have been fatal had the victim not been rushed to hospital. It was reported at Bur Dubai police station. The defendant was detained following the complaint.
The 17-year-old victim, an Emirati student, said that around 1pm on April 19 he was with his friend at a mall. "A man, whom we don't know, came to us and told us to go along to a gate. There we saw a group of about six men. One of them asked me which school I attended. My friend pulled me away to avoid problems."
However, one of the other men called him to go talk to him aside while the others left.
"Three defendants stayed and they pushed me several times. The accused man then brandished a knife and stabbed me in the waist. I ran away and fainted in the hallway leading to a nearby hotel. I was then taken to hospital," the victim recounted during the prosecution investigation.
The victim's 17-year-old Emirati friend, a student, corroborated his statement saying that he stepped in between the defendants and the victim to stop them from physically assaulting and stabbing him.
A police sergeant told the prosecutor they checked the CCTV cameras and spotted three men running towards the hotel. "The victim identified them after showing him their pictures. When we arrested the defendant and his accomplices at his place in Al Quoz, we found the knife he used in the crime with him. When we brought them to the police station, they admitted to the assault charge, claiming the fight was over a girl. The defendant confessed that he, together with some of his friends, chased after the victim towards the hotel to stab him again."
The defendant and his accomplices admitted to the assault and stabbing charges to the prosecution investigator.
According to the forensic report, the stabbing could have killed the victim. "It will leave him with permanent scar. The victim needs more medical follow-ups to determine how serious would his injury be".
The knife and the relevant surveillance cameras footage were seized as prosecution evidence.
A ruling will be pronounced on September 24.
