A 32-year-old driver, who sexually harassed a female swimmer at a beach, was handed a six-month jail sentence by a Dubai court on Wednesday.
The Pakistani man was found guilty by the Dubai Court of First Instance and will be deported after completing his jail term. The hearing was earlier held in private.
He had been detained by the Dubai Police.
During the public prosecution investigation, the complainant, a 39-year-old Filipina cleaner, said that the incident took place on August 2 when she was swimming with her friends in Jumeirah.
"The defendant was swimming there and he kept harassing us. He would go when told to stay away, but then come back again."
She was still swimming about half an hour later when he suddenly swam very close to her. She recalled he forcibly hugged and inappropriately touched her.
After she pushed him away and screamed, he swam away to the beach and left the water. She chased him and asked beachgoers to restrain him.
Her friend, a 42-year-old Filipina cleaner, said she witnessed the incident.
When on-duty patrol police officers responded to the call made by the woman, the defendant confessed he swam close to her but claimed he touched her thigh by mistake. He was arrested then.
The defendant has the right to appeal the ruling within 15 days.
