A Pakistani man has gone on trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance for his alleged involvement with runaway accomplices in robbing Dh293,539 from a vehicle.
According to public prosecution records, the 30-year-old man with the other fugitives targeted a Nepali man as he drove with cash belonging to his workplace. They made away with the money after assaulting and pepper-spraying him.
The incident was reported on June 22 to Jebel Ali police station, after the suspects chased the vehicle on Abu Dhabi-Dubai road. They intentionally crashed into his vehicle to make him stop.
One of them distracted the Nepali driver while his friends, who came in another car, stole the suitcase containing cash. They fled the scene after spraying pepper on the victim.
While his accomplices remain at large, the Pakistani man - who was driving one of the cars that hit the other vehicle - was charged with forcible robbery. The investigating prosecutor requested the court to inflict the strictest legal penalty possible on him.
The victim, 44, said he was on the job at a shop warehouse in Abu Dhabi when he was assigned to transport a money suitcase to the company's headquarters in Jebel Ali, Dubai. "I had been doing such tasks for three years. At Jebel Ali-Lahbab exit, a car hit my vehicle from behind from the left side."
He recounted to the prosecutor how he safely pulled over and was engaged in talking with the other driver when another car stopped near them. "People stepped out of that car and stole the suitcase of cash that I was transporting. They punched me, sprayed pepper in my eye and sped off."
The court adjourned the trial to September 26.
