A water bottle found at the scene of the crime helped the Dubai Police crack a theft case and arrest the two culprits.
The duo - accused of stealing items from a warehouse in Jebel Ali - were each sentenced to two years in prison, followed by deportation.
The accused had challenged the jail sentences pronounced by the Dubai Criminal Court. However, the Dubai Court of Appeal upheld the ruling on Sunday, Emarat Al Youm reported.
It was found that one of the accused was deported more than once, however, he was able to sneak back into the country. The man had been previously arrested for stealing Dh2 million worth of electrical cables from a warehouse.
The court also handed a one-year jail and deportation to a third defendant who bought the items, despite knowing they were stolen.
A Dubai Police witness said that a water bottle found at the site of crime went a long way in solving the case. The bottle was sent to the Department of Criminal Evidence and Criminology for DNA testing. The samples showed that it belonged to a convicted man, who had already been deported for a theft.
The accused was nabbed and confessed to his crime. During questioning, he said that the warehouse was not locked. He went to the warehouse with the second defendant, stole the items and then sold them to the third defendant.
