An Iraqi man and his ex-wife, an Emirati, have been sentenced to three years and one year in jail respectively for forging two certificates of marriage and birth.
The 34-year-old husband, who is at large, forged together with his wife, aged 25, a marriage document by falsifying its details and falsely claiming that his wife is married to another man (her brother by adoption).
They also forged the birth certificate of their daughter by falsely stating to a hospital employee that the father is the other man.
A 21-year-old Emirati student said that the female defendant is her sister by adoption. "She married the other accused and had a girl with him. She falsely claimed at the hospital that the girl is the daughter of my brother who is mentally and physically challenged."
The student added: "She gave birth on February 5, 2012, at a hospital and had a birth certificate issued, bearing my brother's name as the father. Her husband was still in the country then and was aware of it."
The wife said during the questioning that her ex-husband (the defendant) forged both the marriage and birth certificates because his first wife was unaware of his new marriage.
She said he was wanted and could not apply for personal documents at his country's embassy because of this.
The court ordered that the Iraqi man be deported after the completion of his jail term.
