A purchase officer at Dubai Petroleum has gone on trial for allegedly seeking illegal commissions from suppliers.
The 57-year-old Indian employee's alleged illegal wrongdoings were exposed after he sought a certain commission - which was not specified in court documents - from a salesman of a supply company after he made purchases worth Dh796,858 via email.
The employee has been charged in the Court of First Instance with seeking bribes in his capacity as a public employee.
According to prosecutors, the defendant requested a 5 per cent commission for purchases worth Dh147,344 made from another supplier.
In another incident, he also allegedly sought an illegal commission for orders worth Dh312,535 from a salesman of a company that supplies technical equipment.
He is also believed to have solicited a commission that would be a certain percentage of the profits a saleswoman at a supply company would collect after he helped her sell merchandise worth Dh163,740.
A financial audit department expert said he was assigned to prepare a report on the case and it covered the last quarter of 2014 until the first quarter of 2015. "On February 2, 2015, the State Security received a complaint from Dubai Petroleum against the accused."
In the complaint, it was stated that on February 8, the financial department manager of Dubai Petroleum received an official email from the manager of a general trading company saying that the defendant sought a commission from one of their salesmen.
Following that correspondence, the two managers held a meeting during which the trading firm manager revealed that one of their salesmen was paying commissions to two employees at Dubai Petroleum for purchases and deals.
