A tourist has gone on trial at a Dubai court on the charge of assaulting and resisting an on-duty police officer. The Saudi tourist, 39, is also accused of damaging a public property as he tore up the officer's uniform during the assault.
He denied the charge at the Court of First Instance, claiming he was under the influence of alcohol and did not recall the incident.
The case dates back to May 4 in Al Rafaa.
The policeman told the prosecutor: "We were alerted about a fight at a night club. The accused was agitated and being restrained by the security guards when he tried to assault the other men there."
The officer added that when the accused did not respond to his instructions of getting into the police patrol, he pulled him to get him inside the car. "But he then grabbed me by my uniform and tried to get to the other men. He tore and damaged my uniform. He obeyed us when we handcuffed him."
The officer said he thought the accused resisted him without being aware he was a police officer because he looked "very drunk" and in a state of rage.
According to the officer's colleague, the other men said they were not willing to press charges against the defendant and his friend. "But we arrested those two as they were drunk. The defendant's accomplice filmed me while inside the police car.
"While filming, he said he was being taken into custody and that he was handcuffed. The other officer took away his mobile phone."
He corroborated his colleague's statement on the assault and uniform damage incident. Breathalyser tests of both accused came out positive, the criminal evidence report showed.
The defendant's accomplice was referred to the Court of Misdemeanours.
The tourist will be sentenced on July 25.
