Drug smuggler jailed, fined
A man who tried to smuggle 53kg of cocaine, by soaking his clothes in the drug, has been sentenced to ten years in jail.
The Court of First Instance also slapped the 32-year-old Turkish man with Dh100,000 fine and ordered that he be deported after serving the sentence. The defendant was apprehended while trying to make his way through Terminal 3 of the Dubai International Airport.
He earlier denied the charges of smuggling drugs and claimed he was not aware that the clothes were soaked in cocaine. The verdict remains subject to appeal within 15 days at the Court of Appeal.—mary@khaleejtimes.com
