Youssef Mohammed Al Zarouni, acting traffic chief prosecutor in Dubai, said the cases included 195 defendants accused of causing the death of others by mistake. The other charges were driving under the influence of liquor, damaging others’ property and driving without a licence.

The conviction of defendants, as sought by the prosecution, was 99.6 per cent.

Al Zarouni stressed that the traffic prosecutors constantly urged the traffic court when referring the defendants in serious cases to jail them, suspend their driving licences and deny renewal of those licences.

The Traffic Prosecution refers its recommendations to the court as per the Federal Traffic Code and its modifications until 2007. He lauded the swift action and investigation in cases by the traffic prosecutors. Al Zarouni urged all motorists to abide by the laws to avoid legal accountability.

He stressed that the Traffic Prosecution would not hesitate to request the court to award penalties and procedures stipulated in laws to reduce the number of serious traffic cases.
