The terror attack that killed in 40 CRPF soldiers in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, on February 14 might have put a strain on relations between India and Pakistan.
But, ICC World Cup tournament director, Steve Elworthy, revealed that the match between India and Pakistan scheduled on June 16 has over 400,000 applicants for a venue that holds only 25000 spectators.
Elworthy made the revelation of the surging demand for tickets after many veteran cricketers like Harbhajan Singh and Sourav Ganguly called for a boycott of the June 16 clash at the Old Trafford. Moreover, cricketer Chetan Chauhan had expressed that India should put pressure on ICC by threatening to pull out of the entire tournament.
"That particular game (India vs Pakistan), we had over 400,000 applications for tickets, which is an incredible number. The stadium (Old Trafford) only holds 25,000 people. So there are a number of disappointed people. That's just locally, but (there is also) the audience globally," Times Now quoted Elworthy as saying in ESPNCricinfo.
Adding that demand for tickets is more than that of Australia vs England game or even the final at the Lord's, Elworthy said, "To put that (number) in perspective, England vs Australia was around 230-240,000. And the final was around about 260-270,000 applications for tickets. So that gives you a bit of perspective for the demand for this match (India v Pakistan).
It's a big game. They could end up playing each other in the final (too), you never know."
Meanwhile, ICC Chief Executive, David Richardson, said on Tuesday that "there is no indication that any (of the) matches at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup will not go ahead as planned."
