Ahead of India's massive evacuation exercise of stranded nationals from the UAE, an air medical transfer took place from a Dubai hospital to Kochi in Kerala on Wednesday night.

Dileep Sabareesh, who was in Dubai on a visit visa and had suffered stroke, became the first reported medical transfer between the UAE and India ever since the travel restrictions were imposed in March due to Covid-19 pandemic.

Last month, Sabareesh was admitted to Mediclinic City Hospital in Dubai in a critical condition. For further treatment, he was transferred to Aster Medcity Hospital in Kochi.

The CEO of Dubai-based Universal Medical Transfer Services, Nijil Ibrahimkutty, who was following up the case and initiated the airlift, said the seamless operation was made possible due to the cooperation of a number of entities. There was great cooperation from the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Indian missions in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the Indian government, the Kerala government and various departments.

"Sabareesh was here on a visit visa and should have left on March 23 but then the restrictions were put in place. He suffered a stroke last month. He didn't have an insurance coverage. His friends and social workers helped with hospitalisation. Indian missions intervened and his hospital bill was waived."

Sabareesh is now recovering at Aster Medcity Hospital in Kochi.

"The patient is now conscious. He is able to move all four limbs. He has mild left-sided weakness. Sabareesh is oriented to time and place and getting better. Once his result comes, he will be shifted from designated ward to neurology general ward and then sent for rehab," said Dr Boby Varkey Maramattom, senior consultant, neurology, Aster Medcity.
