While most workers were in shabby clothes, sitting aimlessly outside a labour accommodation in Mussafah, Abu Dhabi, Khalid Nawaz was inside the room, dressed up in his best attire of kurta and waist coat.
The Pakistani national was all prepared for his big day. And miles away in Rahim Yar Khan in Punjab province, Pakistan, Nawaz's bride and her family was all set for nikkah.
Once there was a confirmation that the cleric had arrived, the groom took a deep breath and climbed on top of a bunk bed to proceed with the ceremony.
A few minutes of irritating wait passed as there were some initial connection problems for the video call. That was solved soon and all parties could see each other.
After exchange of vows, the groom said 'qubool hai' as the cleric solemnised the nikkah. Some more moments of wishes and prayers, and the video call was over. Nawaz got down from his bunk bed as a new husband. His friend Falak Nawaz was there to congratulate him. That was all.
Khalid Nawaz regretted having to do an online marriage with none to share his happiness with.
"There was pressure from the bride's family. They couldn't wait further. So, I had to do it this way. I am happy that I am married. But who wants such a marriage when your wife is in Pakistan and you are stuck here," he said.
"Life has been tough for me. I am doing odd jobs since the end of 2018. I don't earn much. Even to return home, I have to pay huge fine for overstaying as my visa has been expired. Amid this, my family wanted me to get married. I hope this marriage is start of something new."
"This is difficult time for everyone. As a friend, I offer my full support to him. I hope Allah shows a way," said Falak.
