Much as you wish to be all gung ho and positive about the end of the pandemic, there are moments when despair takes over centre-stage and dispenses its gloom. It can be for a few minutes like an unpleasant interlude or stretch for hours and wreck the day and often tends to kick in at 2am when the world is asleep... and you cannot.

All sorts of gross thoughts snooker into your mind colliding with each other and creating this pattern of uncertainty. Much of this mood has to do with the news and not what is on TV or in the papers but the chilling closeness of Covid-19 in striking people you know, people you care for and love and have broken bread with and did they go gently into that dark night or did they rage against the dying of the light.

And in this sombre state of mind you read about human stupidity and how there are those who simply will not follow the rules or take precautions and it is no longer enough to tolerate their conduct because it is directly and adversely affecting us. When you think walking your dog or taking a jog is vital and getting to the mall is mandated and pooh poohing social distancing or secretly having a pound party because come on, it has been 40 days so give me a break or you sneak your kids out or have family over you are becoming part of the problem. Wear that mask, use the gloves, use the sanitiser.

A doctor friend of mine who is zany by nature but has been a friend for 50 years and is therefore warmly adored says bad behaviour or defiance if you will is a defence, those who exhibit resistance find comfort against the broiling fear within, this is their way of staying sane.

I don't buy it because you cannot justify it if that conduct hurts others. And this cavalier casualness certainly does. If you feel unwell go get checked. Avoid the workplace, don't be a corporate hero.

Be honest, we all know people like this who are on their own trips and we endure them because we are cowards and will not confront them even if they are in our neighbourhood endangering us. Maybe we are the stupid ones.
