The ever humble Bollywood thespian, Amitabh Bachchan, has revealed that young star, Deepika Padukone, was paid more than him for a film they recently did together.
In an interview to Bollywoodlife.com, the 73-year-old Bollywood megastar humbly admitted that Padukone's remuneration for 'Piku' was more than his as she was 'more important'.
The actor, with a career spanning over 47 years, was commenting on a question regarding 'associated prejudices' in the film industry.
"In Piku, Deepika Padukone was paid more than me. That explains two things; One, that she's obviously more important than me, and two, that I've lost my price scale, because I've been working for so long I'm not that important enough to get that kind of money."
At which point the interviewer cuts in and responds, "That's not true."
"It is," says Amitabh. "It's a fact."
The Shoojit Sircar-directed, Piku was both a critical and commercial. It won Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan the Best Actor awards at Filmfare while also bagging the Best Film award.
The actor will be seen next in the Sircar produced, 'Pink'.
It is noteworthy that Padukone, 30, was recently named the tenth highest paid actress in the world by Forbes. Her earnings of $10 million in the last year was half that of Bachchan's, who occupied a far lower comparative spot on the actors list. He was ranked 18 while three other actors - Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar - were among the top 20 actors list.
Pay gap in Bollywood has been a hot topic in recent years, with Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma and Kareena Kapoor Khan amongst others speaking about it openly and demanding equal pay for actresses.
Padukone was reported to have negotiated a salary of Rs12 crores ($1.8 million) for her next Bollywood film, 'Padmavati'. These reports were rubbished by the spokesperson of the team.
The young star will be next seen in her first Hollywood film xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, co-starring Vin Diesel, which releases next year in January.
