‘Akshay looked like a dream machine’

Shabina Khan, the lady behind Shahid’s look in Kismat Konnection is set to wow audiences with her unusual creations for Singh is Kinng where Akshay sports a Rs65 lakh diamond stud turban

SHE HAS been in the industry for 20 years designing for stars like Salman Khan, Shahid Kapur and Akshay Kumar and is all set to dress some international icons for Kambakht Ishq.

Tell us a bit about the movies you have designed for earlier.

I have done loads of films for Salman Khan. Also for all Shahid Kapur’s movies except Ishq Vishq. I have worked on his new look in Kismat Konnection. I have done Shah Rukh’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and all of Ajay Devgan’s films for the past five years. At present I am involved with Singh Is Kinng.

Are you a personal designer for any actor/actress at the moment?

Right now I am designing for Shahid, Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan.

Your favourite piece in Singh Is Kinng?

Akshay’s look in the film is something to die for. It has formal pin stripped suits with pin stripped knee length shorts, a formal shirt along with some slip-ons.

We came up with a totally different look for him. No one has sported such outfits in any film before.

What was your reaction when you dressed Akshay in this new style with the suit and shorts?

He looked like a dream machine; so perfect. He looked so awesome that we went in for three to four more suits for the movie.

What all have you designed for the movie?

We have done a lot of things with Pagdis and suits. Since he plays a Punjabi boy from Chandigarh we have given him a different look from the usual lungi kurta.

Akshay will be wearing a very feminine printed fabric in shades of baby pink and aqua green for the kurtas and lungis. The new look has worked wonders for Akshay. We had to give him a very cool look; after all he is supposed to be the coolest Sardar in town!

What about his fancy turbans?

We have used diamontes for his turban which make it look very stylish and hip.

We used raw silk for all the turbans with different colours for every outfit. Every turban has a precious stone with diamonds studded around it, be it a ruby or an emerald. So each turban is unique.

One favourite turban.

This lime green turban which he wears for a song shot in Egypt. I just love the colour.

How did you come up with the idea of knee length shorts for Akshay?

I saw someone wearing it at a show abroad and I really liked the look. I thought there are very few actors who can carry it off and Akshay Kumar is one of them.

Have you designed anything for Snoop Dogg?

Not really. He has worn his usual clothes but the best part is that he has worn a pagdi.

How is Akshay as a person?

He is great. I have yet to see any actor who works as hard as him; he is constantly on the move.

Does he give any creative inputs in designing?

He is very innovative as a person and is ready to take on various things. In fact, he was all geared up to go with the knee length shorts avatar.

He is always so creative, ready to try out different ideas. In fact it was great working with Akshay.

What is Katrina like?

She is very sweet.

We heard that you’re designing for Sylvester Stallone?

I have done the ‘look’ for Sylvester Stallone in a Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kambakht Ishq and I am even designing for Brandon Routh, which I am very excited abouts

One actor and actress you loved dressing up: I had always wanted to dress up Akshay Kumar and strangely I got a chance to do it which was fantastic.

One actor you would love to design for: I would love to dress up John Abraham.

Hollywood actor/actress you would love to design for: Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston.
