The Aami Parivar GCC social group (Akhil Amarati Marathi Indians Parivar) has stepped forward to help repatriate stranded expats from the UAE by organising flights for them to Mumbai and Pune. A chartered Indigo flight took off on Tuesday from Sharjah to Pune, said US-based NRI Santosh Karande, chairperson and founder of the Aami Parivar GCC social group.
The permission for Aami Parivar group's third flight, from Sharjah on July 11, was approved for 174 passengers. The second flight also took off on July 11 with 174 passengers to Mumbai.
Members of the Aami Parivar, Dhawal Nandedkar and Neelam Nandedkar had facilitated the travel arrangements for stranded expatriates.
"Maharashtra is a Covid-19 Red Zone area. So it was a huge responsibility for to ensure that the passengers reach their destinations in Mumbai and Pune safely, while making sure they are virus-free. The hotel reservations for the quarantine process were done from Dubai beforehand by passengers and tickets were issued to them after they received the hotel vouchers. Government approved vehicles were arranged at the airports to ferry the passengers to their respective quarantine places," added Karande.
However, it has been observed that many passengers prefer to go to Pune rather than Mumbai because the exit period is much more speedier in the city even after observing the guidelines set by the state government.
Intekhab Jable, senior manager - Northern Emirates, Orient Travels & Toursim Agency, said: "The demand for people to travel to India is very high and we've received as many as 900 applications for the previous two flights from Aami Parivar. So far three flights, including today's, have taken off from here and we need to plan more flights. We made arrangements for 516 passengers from Aami to go to India. The support and the facilities offered by the Government of Maharashtra has been remarkable in this aspect." - sandhya@khaleejtimes.com
