'We've closed the fields on the Kuwait-Iraq border, namely the wells in Abdali and Ratqa,' the source told AFP.

'We've also moved most of the manpower and just maintained the essential workers to operate production.'

The northern rigs were being moved south, a process that will be completed in two days, he added.

'The facilities for production are still there,' stressed the source, adding that the measure is in line with an official decision to seal off the entire north of the emirate, which became effective yesterday.

Should the US launch a military campaign against Iraq, production in the north could be shut down altogether, but this would be compensated by added production in the south, the source said.

Kuwait's Opec output quota was increased from Febraury 1 to 1.966 million barrels per day.

The defence ministry declared the north of Kuwait a 'military exclusion zone' as of February 15, and restricted entry without a permit from intelligence or security departments.

The decision came amid a massive US and British troop buildup in Kuwait as the US threatens to launch a military campaign against Iraq and oust Iraqi President.

Kuwait has also heightened security around the country, deploying special units along major roads and highways to prevent terrorist attacks in the event of a US military strike against Iraq.

Some 70,000 US troops are now in Kuwait, based in and around scores of newly built camps in the north alongside an awesome display of military hardware.
