Al Lajjun Oil Shale Co will conduct a six-month feasibility study for the plant before reaching a final agreement, according to the official Jordanian news agency. The facility would be completed in three years in the Al Lajjun area south of Amman, Petra said on Tuesday, without identifying the companies involved.
Jordan says it holds the world’s fourth-largest reserves of shale oil. The government is turning to shale oil along with nuclear, solar and wind power to help meet rising electricity demand. It hopes to attract $14 billion in investments in energy infrastructure.
Jordan has about 40 billion metric tons of shale oil reserves and plans to increase the share of energy it generates from these deposits to 14 per cent of the country’s total requirements, Mousa Ali Alzyoud, the director general of the National Resources Authority, said on October 10.
