With her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II as our patron, the hospital is recognised as one of the top five children’s hospitals in the world.
Children are referred from other hospitals throughout the UK and from overseas where treatment for highly complex or rare conditions is not available in their country.
GOSH is renowned for innovative and latest developments in healthcare and has the widest range of children’s clinical specialists in the UK. It is also the largest centre for heart and brain surgery, has the largest paediatric intensive care unit in the UK and is the third largest centre for children with cancer in the world.
The hospital has carried out over a thousand bone marrow transplants, and research into how such transplants could be carried out better when a partially matched parental donor is used. A non-invasive method of replacing pulmonary heart valves developed at GOSH is now being rolled out to other centres. GOSH has also pioneered the use of gene therapy for treatment of complex conditions.
Working closely with research partner, the Institute of Child Health, GOSH pushes the boundaries of paediatric treatment, research and training. The hospital is the UK’s only Specialist Biomedical Research Centre in paediatrics.
The hospital is also at the forefront of paediatric training in the UK. We train more children’s nurses than any other hospital and play a major role in training paediatric doctors. Nursing practice is advancing rapidly and many nurses also supporting clinical research activity and leading specific nursing care research programmes
As a hospital with a worldwide reputation, GOSH helps to promote the best quality paediatric healthcare management in the Gulf through collaboration with other healthcare institutions. Treating more than 3,000 children annually from the Middle East alone, GOSH opened a Gulf regional office based in Dubai Healthcare City in 2004.
The office is used for managing referrals, patient liaison, and developing consultant visiting programmes in the region. Children and their families benefit from the establishment of the Gulf office by having better access to support before and after treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
This support ensures a better experience for children and families during treatment at GOSH, and better outcomes, by providing appropriate support when the child returns home.
The establishment of a regular consultant-visiting programme has meant that specialists from GOSH come to the region on a regular basis to see children in the comfort of their own environment rather than have the family travel to the UK.
Consultant’s insight to the services provided locally is invaluable when planning children’s discharge back to the region from UK and the teams work together to improve the overall quality of care.
The child first and always ‘has been the hospital’s motto for almost 100 years. Looking after the child’s medical condition and also their overall wellbeing characterizes GOSH’s approach today and informs the vision of the future.
