According to organisers, the 28 edition of the region’s largest ICT exhibition, where a spate of latest technology trends, futuristic IT products and services will be unveiled, is expected to set a new record in the number of visitors despite the global financial crisis.

“As the region’s largest ICT exhibition, Gitex 2008 — lining up 3,300 companies from 83 countries — will provide an interactive platform for businesses and trade visitors from all over the world. The exhibition will also serve as a springboard for leading companies looking to expand their presence in the Middle East,” said a spokesman of Dubai World Trade Centre, which is organising the event.

Running parallel with the Technology Week is Gitex Shopper & Consumer Electronics Expo 2008, an ICT retail platform that opened on Saturday at the Dubai Airport Expo.

Organisers expected Gitex Technology Week to draw more than 130,000 visitors over the next five days.

Major international companies launching new products and making announcements at the exhibition include Blackberry, Dell, du, Etisalat, Google, HP, Microsoft, Oracle, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, Sun MicroSystems and Symantec.

Doors will open at 1:00pm at DICEC, where visitors will be able to experience the latest products and solutions first-hand from many of the biggest brands in the ICT industry.

One of the highlights on the first day will be the keynote address from the chairman and co-founder of Sun Microsystems, Scott McNealy, who will be speaking at this year’s Global Conference. The conference has been expanded this year to include an impressive 35 tracks of interactive discussion, featuring some of the world’s leading industry experts on new generation technology. Sessions include a series of developer workshops with specific emphasis on supporting the development of original Arabic games and software.

The five day show is open from 1pm-7pm on 19 October, 10am-7pm on 20-22 October and 10am-5pm on 23 October. The exhibition is open to trade and business professionals only. The price of a one-day pass is Dh40 and Dh100 for a five-day pass. Admission includes access to all events including Gitex Business Solutions, GULFCOMMS, and Consumer Electronics. The Consumer Electronics segment only will be open, free to the general public on 23 October.
