Zero-lithium back-up batteries, which are safe to carry in all airlines, will soon make their debut in the UAE, promising air travellers a hassle-free passage through airport security checkpoints.
The launch of the new generation 'Travo Safe' power banks by GP Batteries comes at a time when all airlines are restricting the carriage of lithium batteries, power banks and even certain mobile phones in checked-in and cabin baggages, said Lalu Samuel, CEO and managing director of GP Batteries Middle East, which is a joint venture with Kingston Holdings of Sharjah.
Travo Safe battery will be available in the UAE from January and will be priced below Dh300.
The Hong Kong-based GP Batteries, the only manufacturer in the world to develop the zero-lithium battery, also announced the signing of partnership agreements with two local groups, JK Group - National Stores and ADMMI, a fast-moving consumer goods distributor in the UAE, for the distribution and marketing of the full range of GP products.
Samuel said GP Batteries Middle East is a joint venture between GP Batteries Hong Kong and Kingston Holdings. The regional operation is responsible for marketing and logistics in the Middle East and African region covering 60 countries.
"Even the normal GP power bank is feature-rich with over temperature cut off; safeguard from malfunction due to short circuit, and shields against overcharging, over discharging, over leaking and low temperature," said Samuel.
Boasting a turnover of HK$5.8 billion, GP Batteries employs 8,250 people worldwide. GP, one of the major suppliers of primary and rechargeable batteries, is also Asia's No 1 brand of alkaline batteries, rechargeable batteries and chargers.
Present at the launch were Salah Khoory, general manager of JK Group, and Ashok Kaushik, general manager, ADMMI, along with senior executives of Kingston and GP Batteries.
Samuel, who also heads Kingston Holdings, which was established in 1996 in Sharjah, said his company has more than 30 high-end international brands through multinational joint ventures.
