DPA records 23 pc growth in container throughput

DUBAI - Dubai Ports Authority (DPA) handled 5.15 million TEUs (twenty feet equivalent units) last year against 4.19 million TEUs in 2002, recording a record 23 per cent growth in container throughput.

Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman of Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), said: "Dubai Ports Authority was very responsive to meet business changes and customers growing needs through the announcement of its master development plan which took place early last year. This DPA giant leap coincides with our continuous effort to meet best international standards, which highly contribute in improving our operations beyond all expectations."

Jamal Majid bin Thaniah, Chief Executive Officer of DPA, said: "Once again we have worked to achieve even greater results for 2003, "DPA's drive for quality in all areas of operations and services has lead our strategic planners to proactively meet our customers requirements to enhance their business. Captured in the DPA Master Plan are projects geared towards meeting global standards and the changes facing local and international shipping industry."

DPA has completed the development phase of berth 11 at Jebel Ali Terminal and the expansion of its container yard to add 116,000 square meter. Around 120,000 square meter was also added to berths 22 and 23.

The Master Plan has progressed further as first phase of work development at berths 18, 19 and 21 will commence on September of this year.

The reshaped Quay 4 will add 400 meter of quay length with a draft of 17 meters, and 150,000 square metre as an additional yard storage area.

Work has also started on developing and dredging some berths dedicated to General Cargo, and the construction of Empty Containers Storage Area, which will provide around 246,000 square meter to be ready, mid of this year.
