The leading lady of the film 'Simran', Kangana Ranaut, has been making headlines lately with her bold views and shocking revelations. Not surprising then that everybody is minutely scrutinizing the film that released this weekend.
This could well be a make or break movie for Kangana.
Expectations are high as her 2014 solo film 'Queen' took her career to new heights and her fans have similar expectations from this film. Does she manage to lead the film single-handedly? Let's find out.
'Simran' is a movie about a 30-year-old divorcee Praful Patel, based in Atlanta and leading the ordinary life by working in the house-keeping department of a hotel. She harbours a dream of buying her own house and is saving up for 7 years to make it happen. PRAFUL IS A GIRL'S NAME??
Just then, a bachelorette party takes her to the sin city Las Vegas and she ends up being addicted to gambling, and also gets robbed. Based on a true story, the movie is situational and engages you as you wonder what will happen with Praful.
Yes, the bank robbery scenes that Kangana embarks on with great ease look frivolous but you continue to invest in her. Much like 'Queen', the audience is soaked in the film and feels the emotions the character is going through - be it the small happiness of her making $2000 in the first gamble of her life, the frustration of her life not shaping the way she wants, or the anger of her losing all the money after she is robbed.
She also has an endearing set of parents with their middle-class worries. Enter a love interest, played by Soham Shah, who manages to make a place for himself in the film, otherwise dominated by Kangana.
Hansal Mehta, known for his critically acclaimed films like 'Shahid' and 'Citylights' handles the subject with care and doesn't glorify the character. Although we know that the character she portrays is flawed and isn't heroic, you can't help but be her cheerleader.
Overall, 'Simran' is an honest film made with a true heart and totally recommended to watch this weekend. The last scene will leave a smile on your face as you leave the theatres.
