After a year of hugging our belongings to gauge their joy factor, it's no surprise that the urge to keep things tidy and fresh comes creeping in as the New Year sets in, right down to your makeup bag. Trends change fast and as creatures of habit, we can get stuck in the same cycle for years. To help yourself let go of the old and embrace the new, follow the below tips to streamline your set of tools in 2018.
Take a long, hard look at your brow pencil
Girls, reassess your brow situations: do not underestimate the power of brushed eyebrow hair. If you have an eyebrow pencil that is the same colour or darker than your hair, toss it. The colour of your brow products needs to be at least two shades lighter than your hair colour, so it appears as a shadow, not a solid colour.
Toss the colour-correcting palettes
Colour correctors were all the rage in 2017, but they might not really be deserving of a spot in your makeup pouch. Whilst these multi-coloured palettes are useful for a professional makeup artist who needs to correct spots on an array of different skin tones, the idea of makeup is not to cover up but to enhance features. To achieve a more even look, try using a tinted moisturiser followed by a flesh-toned concealer and get the same effect.
Trim down your lipstick collection
Out with the old, in with the new! Make space for shades that actually work for you. Any beauty enthusiast is guaranteed to have three or more lipsticks that are only slightly different shades of each other. Find the one that works best and toss the other two . . . or 12.
If a sheer brown is your staple, consider adding in a high-impact option. It is always nice to keep a bold lip colour in your day-to-day makeup bag, it can get you ready for a night out when you only have five minutes to get out of the door, or draw attention away from other problem areas if you have a breakout or tired eyes.
Get serious about your lashes
Can't argue with this one. An eyelash curler is essential, it helps make the eyes shine brighter without the shadow of uncurled lashes. Another little trick you could try out is layering your mascara, with an old as well as a new one. Apply the older version as a base, because it's more fibrous and plumps the lashes at the root. Top that with the newer one, and pull all the way to the ends to avoid chunks on the tips of your lashes.
Happy organising!
