The best way to protect your hair and keep it healthy is to look after your scalp and keep it as clean as possible. Given the climate in Dubai, I would suggest washing the scalp daily or even every second day; this will minimise any build-up of chemicals from products. You can also invest in some essential oils and use these on your scalp - personally, I love peppermint oil as it smells great, too.
What you put into your body is also essential for healthy, happy hair and there are so many amazing and delicious foods you can enjoy to promote this. One of the best foods you can eat is salmon as it is loaded with vitamins, including Vitamin D that stimulates hair follicles to grow. Alongside this, salmon is also full of protein and it contains Omega-3 fatty acids, which promote hair growth by keeping the scalp healthy. If you're vegetarian, there are lots of other foods that are high in similar proteins. Two of my favourites are walnuts and oatmeal. It's not just proteins either - pumpkins and carrots are great to add to your diet as they are packed with vitamin A that helps with oil production, which again keeps your scalp healthy. Another delicious superfood is avocado, which also doubles up as a DIY hair mask. It helps to rejuvenate and moisturise the scalp. Avocado is also a rich source of protein, amino acids and vitamins, which helps soothe the scalp.
If you're going to invest in a supplement to help with hair, one of the top vitamins you should look out for is vitamin A, as this helps skin glands make an oily substance called sebum that moisturises the scalp. Vitamin B is great as it helps in the production of red blood cells that generate oxygen to the hair follicles. Vitamin C is an amazing antioxidant that also helps to produce collagen, which, from the base, helps to create a strong hair structure. Vitamin E helps prevent oxidative stress, which allows the hair to grow more freely. In minerals, iron is important as it makes sure the scalp is circulating blood and oxygen, which again promotes and allows for healthy hair follicles. Remember, what you put into your body is what will show on the outside.
When it comes to products you're going to use on your hair, it's important to first invest in a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner. It's important to trust your stylist and ask them for recommendations. They will have a better knowledge of your hair's condition and can suggest different ranges depending on what you're trying to achieve. For example, if you're trying to grow your hair, Kerastase Extensioniste is a treatment that should be done once a month in the salon. It deep cleanses your hair and scalp. After the salon visit, you are also encouraged to use the take-home kit daily. If you do, it promises to grow your hair an inch in a month! To finish off, the easiest tip I have for pampering your hair is to purchase a Tangle Teezer (or two or three!). It is so soft and gentle on your hair and scalp that it prevents hair breakage. I think I own about 10 of them!
