With an aim to raise awareness among young motorists, the Abu Dhabi Police held a Youth Circle workshop in national capital on Monday.
Young drivers from across the UAE Capital attended the workshop titled 'Your Life is Expensive', which discussed ways to enhance road safety in the emirate.
Major General Mohammed Khalfan Al Rumaithi, Commander-in-Chief of Abu Dhabi Police, said that the police are targeting the youth in particular as they are "the hope of tomorrow and the bright future of the country."
He stressed the keenness of Abu Dhabi Police to use the available techniques and technologies to spread traffic culture and enhance road safety.
Major General Al Rumaithi also pointed out the importance of the role of media and social networking sites in promoting traffic awareness among the youth generation and urging them to abide by traffic laws.
Sheikh Khalid bin Faisal Al Qassimi, the UAE Rally Champion, who spoke about the main causes of traffic accidents, pointed out the top reasons of road accidents as sudden swerving and speeding.
Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zafin, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, stressed the importance of raising awareness among young people of the dangers of excessive speed while driving.
He pointed out that the presence of radars on roads contributed to a significant role in reducing the speed of vehicles.
Al Zafin also presented cases of road accidents, which revealed how crucial it is to wear the seat belt. The cases specifically highlighted the reduction of injuries that may occur as a result of accidents caused by sudden swerving.
He thus called for road users to abide by rules in order to increase the levels of traffic safety, stressing the role of youth in reducing the statistics of road accidents in the UAE
Major-General Al Zafin, also referred to the role of the Federal Traffic Council, in setting laws that limit the causes of road accidents and deaths.
Major Dr Ahmed Mohammed Al Ramahi, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Police Youth Council, added that a majority of crashes were in fact caused by young drivers, and thus awareness among them holds the key to reducing accidents.
