Surgeons faced a long and very tense task to remove a live grenade embedded in the face of a Colombian soldier following an accident. The soldier was taken to a military hospital in Bogota by ambulance for the operation. The transfer took eight hours but officials said they couldn't move him by helicopter because of the risk of the grenade exploding. "The procedure was a little unusual," the hospital's chief of surgery says with a hint of understatement.
"The operation took place in an improvised area outside in a car park and helipad, given there was an explosive device embedded in the patient's face." The soldier was said to be making a good recovery following his ordeal.
Authorities say the grenade was embedded in his right jaw when a launcher was accidentally activated by a fellow soldier while on patrol.
