The shops will gradually move into the new market built at an estimated cost of Dh5 million by the Ajman Department of Municipality and Planning. Spread over an area of 1,800 square metres, the Central Fruit and Vegetable market in Ajman will house 44 shops and stalls.
Saif Salim Al Shamsi, Deputy Director-General of Ajman Municipality, told Khaleej Times that the existing fruit and vegetable shops located in the Irani Souq would be shut down if they failed to shift to the new market premises.
“The owners of these shops were already given a deadline to move their business to the new location.”
He said the municipality was currently working in co-ordination with the Ajman Police to shift the facilities from the old market to the new one.
Al Shamsi pointed out that the new Central Vegetable Market, which reflects the emirate’s infrastructural development, has a modern design and includes an administrative block as well as wholesale and retail markets. The wholesale market comprises several blocks housing a total of more than 44 outlets and stalls. Each shop in the market is provided with two parking spaces to carry out loading of the goods on one side and unloading on the other side.
The centralised refrigerators and warehouses have also been set up in this section.
He added: “There is a rest area for truck drivers, a cafeteria, residential quarters for workers, a mosque, garbage collection areas, police station, restaurants, and an administrative section. An external parking lot that can accommodate trucks and cars of the customers is now fully operational."
He said the new market, which is located on the Al Ahmadiya Road, is easily accessible from different parts of the emirate. The market, Al Shamsi said, is designed to meet the requirements of the emirate's vegetable and fruit trade and will contribute to the speedy development of Ajman.
He said that the construction of the market was taken up as part of the municipality's new strategic development plan for the emirate, which also includes several developmental projects including new fish market coming up at a cost of Dh9 million.
